Aberdeen His Majesty's Theatre

Description

Opened in 1906 to the designs of the eminent Victorian architect Frank Matcham, His Majesty's Theatre was probably the first theatre in the world to be built entirely of granite. Placed at the head of Union Terrace Gardens it enjoys one of the most beautiful urban settings in the country. The theatre commands enthusiastic support from a discerning audience from the city of Aberdeen and its hinterland stretching from Elgin in the north to Dundee in the south.

The auditorium, housing some 1,500 patrons, has been heralded as one of the most beautiful of any major touring theatre in the British Isles. Its fine decoration is enhanced with delicate detail picked out in 23 carat gold and draped with luxurious crimson velvet. Sightlines and acoustics are excellent even to the rear of the stalls and the spacious balcony.

The Dress Circle Bar is quite unique, being probably the only original circular bar in any Edwardian theatre. With pre-ordering facilities and service at the Italian marble bar, its reputation for efficient courtesy is equalled only by the stalls bar downstairs.

Level Access
(for customers with wheelchairs or walking difficulties)
There are two parking spaces for the disabled in Donald's Way, off Skene St, between H M Theatre and St Mark's Church. From Donald's Way there is a ramped access, via a side door, into the Stalls. On arrival please ring the doorbell at the side door and a member of Front of House staff will assist. There are 4 wheelchair spaces in the rear stalls; early booking is recommended. The same party can book only two positions unless special arrangements are made with the Box Office.

Sound Enhancement
An infra red sound enhancement system is available for hearing impaired customers. Headset or necklace-type receivers, for use with hearing aids, are available from Front of House staff in the foyer.

Car Parking
The Denburn Multi Storey Car Park situated behind the Theatre in Spa Street has 326 spaces. Parking is FREE after 6.00pm.

Refreshments
There are two bars: one at Stalls level and one at Dress Circle (no smoking). Both bars open half an hour before performances and interval drinks can be pre-ordered. Tea and coffee facilities are available during the interval at the rear of the Stalls and in the Upper Circle. Ice Cream is sold throughout the auditorium. Sweets are available from the Kiosk, off the main foyer. Drinks are not permitted in the auditorium, except for disabled customers.

Photography
Photography, sound and video recording is not permitted during performances.

Smoking Policy
Smoking is not permitted within HM Theatre, with the exception of the Stalls Bar and the main foyer. Out of consideration to others we would ask smokers to refrain from smoking while in the building.
